Comparative Analysis of Poverty and Inequality in Togo : A Multidimensional Approach Based on a Wealth Index

Based on a composite poverty indicator, the analysis of the level and evolution of multidimensional poverty in Togo between 1988 and 1998 reveals a downward trend using both relative and absolute poverty lines. Over the two periods studied, non-monetary poverty strongly increased in the rural households and appears to be present on a large scale in the Savanna region. Considering the composite poverty indicator’s distribution, it appears that poverty is unequally distributed throughout the country with a stronger intensity in the rural areas and the Savanna region
