Construal Level Theory - Eine Theorie für die Grenzenlose Unternehmung? (Construal Level Theory - A Theory for the Boundaryless Organization?)

Der Umgang mit Distanz ist eine Kernaufgabe grenzenloser Unternehmen. Trotz der großen praktischen Relevanz von Distanz für Organisationen und obwohl bereits empirische Befunde zu den Auswirkungen von Distanz auf organisationales Verhalten vorliegen, ist das theoretische Konzept der Distanz nur unzureichend in die Organisationstheorie und -forschung integriert. Der vorliegende Artikel bietet eine individuumzentrierte Perspektive auf den Umgang mit Distanz in verteilt arbeitenden, insbesondere virtuellen, Organisationen und Teams. Die Construal Level Theory ist eine sozial-kognitive Theorie, die sich in besonderer Weise zur Erklärung und Vorhersage der Auswirkungen von wahrgenommener Distanz auf Verhalten in virtuellen Teams und Organisationen eignet. Der Beitrag zeigt auf, inwiefern diese Theorie zum besseren Verständnis des Agierens und Interagierens von Individuen in verteilten und insbesondere virtuellen Organisationen und Teams beitragen kann. The management of distance is a central task of the boundaryless organization. Despite the great practical relevance of distance for organizations and although there is already empirical evidence for the effects of distance on organizational behavior, the theoretical concept of distance is still insufficiently integrated in organizational theory and research. The present article conveys an individual-centered perspective on the management of distance in distributed, especially virtual, organizations and teams. Construal Level Theory is a social-cognitive theory which is particularly suitable for explaining and predicting the effects of perceived distance on behavior in virtual teams and organizations. The article shows how this theory can contribute to a better understanding of the actions and interactions of individuals in distributed and virtual organizations and teams
