Critical Success Factors for ERP Projects
Over the past decade, Enterprise Resource Planningsystems (ERP) have become one of the most importantdevelopments in the corporate use of informationtechnology. ERP implementations are usually large,complex projects, involving large groups of people andother resources, working together under considerabletime pressure and facing many unforeseendevelopments. In order for an organization to competein this rapidly expanding and integrated marketplace,ERP systems must be employed to ensure access to anefficient, effective, and highly reliable informationinfrastructure. Despite the benefits that can be achievedfrom a successful ERP system implementation, there isevidence of high failure in ERP implementation projects.Too frequently key development practices are ignoredand early warn ing signs that lead to project failure arenot understood. Identifying project success and failurefactors and their consequences as early as possible canprovide valuable clues to help project managers improvetheir chances of success. It is the long-range goal of ourresearch to shed light on these factors and to provide atool that project managers can use to help better managetheir software development projects. This paper willpresent a review of the general background to our work;the results from the current research and conclude with adiscussion of the findings thus far. The findings willinclude a list of 23 unique Critical Success Factorsidentified throughout the literature, which we believe tobe essential for Project Managers. The implications ofthese results will be discussed along with the lessonslearnt.
