Criticality of Robustness Checks for Complex Simulations and Modeling

A reasonable result from a complex simulation does not imply validity of the underlying formulations: robustness checks are essential. We analyze the disturbance scheme for solder joint lifetime prediction from this viewpoint and results suggest it may not provide the previously reported benefits relative to damage modeling, or even uncoupled constitutive simulations. Such considerations hold across disciplines. Similar analyses for financial modeling suggest the need for external regulations to sustain free markets if financial considerations are to be taken as the basis for wider socioeconomic policy; and that on the investor side, attempts towards beating the market consistently are futile
