Deforestation and Forest Land Use-Theory, Facts and Policy Implications

The social value of forestry in the effective forestry zone in the north eastern region of India is greater than its its cost of access, harvesting plus the cost of securing property rights. In the north eastern region, the magnitude of this current resource extraction zone is quite large.Thus it calls for effective public policy intervention in the form of secure property rights and efficient management practices. This involves some cost. This paper advocates for sharing of the total cost among the international community, Govt. of India and the respective state governments because of the nature of externalities present in forests. Alternative sources of livelihood in non-farm sector should be created in terms of policy inducement and intervention to ease out the pressure on the forests
