Digital Technologies and New Spectrum : The (Future) Use of the 700 Mhz Frequency Band in the European Union Framework

In the vast development of technologies nowadays, demand for radio spectrum in the European Union (EU) is increasing exponentially, especially for mobile data consumption due to an increasing usage of smart devices with its bandwidth-hungry applications, and also the rising of machine-to-machine communications as the Internet of Things developed. In the light of that, recommendation to repurpose the 700 MHz frequency band has brought up in 2014. This paper aims to analyse how the repurposing will fit in the EU framework, how it will be a successful submission to maximize the economic and social benefits of spectrum frequency usage. This repurposing recommendation will be discerned by putting it in the scope of Directive 2002/21/EC (Framework Directive), also analysing feasible approach to safeguard the EU internal market such as harmonizing technical aspects as well as providing certainty for the stakeholders
