Does the Innovation Output of Small- and Medium-Sized Companies Decrease As the Entrepreneur Ages? (Sinkt mit zunehmendem Alter des Unternehmers der Innovationsoutput mittelständischer Unternehmen)

English Abstract: This paper examines the impact of the age of the entrepreneur on the innovation activity of his firm on the basis of nearly 16.000 observations. The key findings are: the probability to implement process innovations declines with age. However, no significant negative effect of the age of the entrepreneur on product innovations can be found, neither on market novelties nor on product imitations. The reason for the decline in the process innovations should be a long amortization period, which would extend beyond the time of the age-related handover of the enterprise. Over all, the effect of entrepreneurs' age on innovation appears to be less negative than that of employees (negative age effect on both, product and process innovations). This might be due to the special role of the entrepreneur in the innovation process, which is not only restricted to the elaboration of innovations but also includes the management of innovation processes and decision taking.German Abstract: Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Wirkung des Alters des Unternehmers auf die Innovationstätigkeit seines Unternehmens auf der Basis von knapp 16.000 Beobachtungen. Zentrales Ergebnis ist, dass die Wahrscheinlichkeit, Prozessinnovationen im Unternehmen zu implementieren, mit zunehmendem Alter des Unternehmers sinkt. Dagegen kann für Produktinnovationen, selbst bei einer Unterscheidung in Marktneuheiten und Produktnachahmungen kein Rückgang ermittelt werden. Grund für den Rückgang der Prozessinnovationen dürfte eine lange Amortisationsdauer sein, die über den Zeitpunkt der altersbedingten Unternehmensübergabe hinaus reichen würde. Somit zeigt sich beim Einfluss des Alters des Unternehmers ein abweichendes Bild gegenüber jenem des Belegschaftsalters, für das häufig ein Rückgang sowohl der Produkt- als auch der Prozessinnovationen ermittelt wird. Dies dürfte auf die besondere Rolle des Unternehmers im Innovationsprozess zurückzuführen sein, die sich nicht auf das Generieren von Problemlösungen beschränkt, sondern auch wesentlich von Steuerungs- und Entscheidungsfunktionen geprägt ist
