Education and Health Status Among Scheduled Tribes in India : An Overview

The Tribes are notified as Scheduled Tribes (ST) under Article 342 of the Constitution, which makes special provision for ‘tribes, tribal communities, parts of, or groups within which the President may so notify’. In the post-Independence period, while the Constitution protected the rights of the STs and accorded them reservation in the legislature, educational, health, socio-economical and government jobs, other ‘development’ activities. This study tries to show the status of STs in India with special reference to Health and Education
