Elements of a Theory of the Firm in Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill

After presenting very briefly Coase's contribution, an attempt will be made to reveal that internal organization of industrial firms and their organization were thoroughly discussed in Classical Political Economy. Smith and Mill have provided two distinct elementary explanations for the existence of firms, related to the advantages of the division of labor and the needs for larger capital accumulation respectively
