Networking wird hier definiert als eine systematische Form der Beziehungspflege mit anderen Menschen. Es hebt sich von den normalen sozialen Kontakten, die man pflegt, dadurch ab, dass man Networking systematisch und strategisch betreibt, Netzwerke bewusst knüpft und gestaltet zum Zwecke des gegenseitigen Austauschs, des persönlichen Vorteils, aber auch der Förderung der anderen Mitglieder des Netzwerks. Der Autor unterrichtet Psychologie an der FH für öffentliche Verwaltung in Köln und ist Management-Trainer. Er vermittelt in seinem Buch allgemeine Grundregeln für alle Lebenssituationen und gibt konkrete Tipps z.B. darüber, wie man Informationen sammelt. Viele praktische Beispiele aus seiner Tätigkeit als Coach verdeutlichen und erleichtern seine Ausführungen zu Themen wie Kontakttraining, erfolgreiche Gesprächsführung, Nutzung der modernen Kommunikationstechnik. Alle Bestrebungen laufen darauf hinaus, einen großen Fundus von Beziehungen zu haben, um im Bedarfsfall Unterstützung zu erfahren. Wichtig ist dabei die Gegenseitigkeit.
