Firm Technology Usage

There are essentially no large-scale datasets with detailed information on firm-level technology usage (as opposed to patent ownership) with broad coverage of technologies and firms over an extended period of time. Yet, technology usage is central to many fields of economics and finance. In this research, we use textual analysis of patent descriptions from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and business descriptions from 10-K annual reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to produce the first large-scale dataset with measures of association between individual firms and individual technologies covering the near-universe of public firms and patents in the United States over the last three decades
