Forest Conservation Politics from Below : Social Movements, Forest Squats and Eco-Solidarism in Germany
The article introduces the concepts of forest conservation politics from below and Eco-Solidarism to the forest policy and environmental scholarship by analysing radical environmental social movements aiming at mobilizing society to protect forests in Germany. By focussing on the movements´ policy goals, ideologies and tactics, with a specific attention towards the practice of forest squats, I can add new insights to the perspectives on politics of a specific group of societal actors relating themselves emotionally and ideologically to forest and environmental conservation in Germany. Analysing forest conservation politics from below in a comparative manner is of high relevance due to public perceptions of forest conservation as an important instrument of biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. Based on the in-depth-analysis of 16 forest protection protests in Germany and by analysing 49 newspaper articles, I can show that forest conservation from below is characterized by the strategic framing of climate and ecological emergencies by movement actors, the willingness of movement actors to build alliances with a broad range of societal actors, prefigurative politics aiming at circumvening institutionalized public policy making, criticisms of the state-industry nexus, global justice theories aiming at reducing inequalities and a politico-theoretical approach, which contains the assumption that forests should be de-commodified
