Highlights- A new concept for estimation of porosity in tree belts using LiDAR data is proposed.- The porosity of tree belts is expressed by gap fraction under and inside the canopies.- A first, 3-dimensional, inner tree belt structure diagnostics methodology is presented.- A new GIS tool for calculating point density in horizontal cross-sections of tree belts is developed.- The porosity detection allows for better decisions in precision agroforestry
