[Abstract]: Stream Control Transmission Protocol(SCTP) is a reliabletransport protocol combining the advantages ofTCP and UDP. SCTP has many desirable features includingmultihoming, multistreaming, and partial datareliability. These features have made SCTP performmuch more effectively in multimedia networking applications.They have also worked better in wireless environmentwhich traditional transport protocols are ineffectiveand cumbersome.Before the transmission, an application usingSCTP needs to establish an association between theclient and the server. The establishment of associationrequires a number which will be used to create multiplestreams. However, SCTP has not specified a method orsuggested any ideas of determine the number.In our paper, we focus on the performance of SCTPprotocol over the wireless networks. The ideas is to extendthe SCTP with a process of determining an optimalnumber prior to the association establishing. We examinethe modified SCTP on a simulated wireless networks,and the experiment results of simulation usingNS2 have shown the modified SCTP is feasible and alsodemonstrated the modified SCTP’s superiority of performanceover TCP and UDP over the wireless networks.
