Increase in fire Outbreak-Related Deaths : A Call for The Strong Involvement of Public Health During Fire Outbreak (Wildfire) Emergencies in The United States. A Policy Brief
Response to fire outbreaks ideally requires relevant multisectoral collaboration. However, in many instances, not all sectors are involved in fire outbreaks or the aftermath of a fire disaster. The focus still follows the old tradition of the immediate preservation of lives and properties. Not very much emphasis is placed on environmental public health implications (disease outbreaks), both in its short-term and long-term effects. The recent release data (2019 report) from the US fire administration shows a disturbing increase in fire outbreak-related deaths and dollar loss, despite the reduction in the occurrence of fire outbreaks occurrence across the United States. According to the information available on the Trust for America’s health website, it is stated that “public health has a significant role in wildfire emergency response”. Thus, it is a critical need to have more public health involvement in any fire disaster response in the United States and globally as well. This policy brief suggests this critical recommendation
