Innovative Low-Carbon Cities : The Carbon Reduction Effect of Innovative City Pilot Policies

Using a sample of 268 cities in China from 2002 to 2020, we found that the implementation of the innovative city pilot policy can help slow down the growth of urban carbon emissions. It also showed that the reduction effect of the policy is stronger in large cities and provinces. The mechanism test revealed that the policy can help reduce the urban carbon emissions by implementing various technological innovations and spatial intensification. The findings of this study provide valuable theoretical support for the implementation of the innovative city pilot policy and promote low-carbon development in China's cities
