Interindustry Linkages : The Flow Network of a Physical Input-Output Table (Piot): Theory and Application

An ecological network approach is used to delineate the different kinds of material flows implicit in a so-called Euler series and the Leontief inverse. In this total flow context, the implications of the hypothetical extraction method are elaborated and the concepts of backward and forward linkages are explored. Using this framework, the 1990 PIOT for West Germany is examined. There is a focus on the implications of hypothetical extraction on the materials recycling represented in the PIOT
