Is (It) Governance Manifested in Path-Dependent Behavior of the Firm?

Today's emerging business landscapes have triggered a continuous change in the operating paradigms of firm governance, and consequently IT governance. However, firm level behaviors are increasingly following a set pattern. This is precisely because of path dependent mechanisms that have embedded themselves onto firm governance. This article lays down the author's view of governance and subsequently takes the reader through the concept of path dependence and its current day pervasiveness in business enterprises. A broader context of 'governance' has been set to briefly touch on concepts like ownership and control that lend to the importance of governance, per se. It is argued that large-scale interventions, as in IT interventions, fail to take off because of enterprise's historicity
