Kooperationen als Strategie zur Bew?ltigung von Finanzierungsengp?ssen: eine Analyse der deutschen Biotechnologiebranche
Das Fundament einer erfolgversprechenden Finanzierungsstrategie bilden zun?chst nachhaltige Markt- und Produktausrichtungen, ein kompetentes Management, ein etabliertes Netzwerk von Investoren und nicht zuletzt nachweisbare Erfolge aus der Vergangenheit. Besonders letztes Kriterium gewinnt in einem von Unsicherheit gepr?gten Umfeld an Bedeutung, kann jedoch von jungen Biotech-Unternehmen verst?ndlicherweise nicht erf?llt werden.Hier verbirgt sich die Besonderheit des Innovationsprozesses dieser Branche. Ein ?berdurchschnittlich langer Entwicklungszeitraum gepaart mit immensen Kosten f?hrt zu dem f?r die Biotech-Industrie spezifischen Problem der langen Zeitspanne bis zum Erreichen der Gewinnschwelle. Aufgrund des sp?ten Entstehens eines kommerziellen Biotechnologiesektors in Deutschland ? rund 20 Jahre nach der Gr?ndung des ersten Biotech-Unternehmens in den USA ? weist die Mehrheit der deutschen Firmen nicht die finanziellen Ressourcen auf, um neue Wirkstoffe oder Technologien eigenst?ndig zu kommerzialisieren.In den Anf?ngen stellten ?ffentliche F?rdermittel eine unerl?ssliche Finanzquelle dar. Zwar ist die Unternehmensfinanzierung in Deutschland ?blicherweise durch Fremdkapital gepr?gt, doch Bankkredite k?nnen als Fr?hphasenfinanzierung kaum realisiert werden, da den ben?tigten gro?en Kapitalmengen keine Sicherheiten in entsprechender Gr??enordnung gegen?berstehen. In der zweiten H?lfte der 1990er Jahre kristallisierte sich daher erstmals eine Trendwende hin zur Eigenkapitalfinanzierung heraus. Allerdings sind die traditionellen Eigenkapitalquellen, wie Risikokapital oder eine Finanzierung ?ber die B?rse, gegenw?rtig nahezu ausgetrocknet.Davon ausgehend soll anhand einer theoretischen und empirischen Aufarbeitung die Forschungsfrage untersucht werden, ob Kooperationen mit Industriepartnern und dem Wissenschaftssektor f?r deutsche Biotech-Unternehmen eine geeignete Strategie zur Bew?ltigung der Finanzierungsengp?sse darstellen.Einerseits soll durch den Zufluss von Sofort-, Meilenstein- oder Lizenzzahlungen die Realisierung der Innovationsprojekte in direkter Weise unterst?tzt werden. Andererseits soll durch den Zugang zu im eigenen Unternehmen nicht oder nicht in ausreichendem Ma?e vorhandenen Wissen das Finanzbudget indirekt entlastet werden.Ein wesentlicher Aspekt ist dabei die Frage, warum nicht alle Firmen Kooperationen nutzen, um ihr ?berleben zu sichern oder ihre Wettbewerbsf?higkeit zu verbessern. Offensichtlich reicht der alleinige Anreiz finanzschwacher Biotech-Unternehmen zu kooperativem Verhalten nicht aus. Vielmehr m?ssen sie auch als attraktiver Partner wahrgenommen werden.
