[eng] Abstract . Both builders and users in Japan continued to learn advanced technology from US machines tools. The purchase of machine tools as capital goods necessitated the learning of know-how on machine working that the US builders had accumulated through production and sales activities for various kinds of users, both within the US and abroad. Although there were only a small number of manufacturers in the Japanese machine tool industry at which foreign engineers stayed for a long time to deliver technical guidance, engineers from abroad had a decisive impact on the development of technology in each company.
