Legal Regulation of International Sports Organization : A Case Study on FIFA Corruption
The increasing influence of international sports organizations in international commerce has sparked the interest of worldwide regulators. The FIFA corruption scandal highlights the need for effective regulation in this field. As a non-profit association registered in Switzerland, FIFA operates with great autonomy and has established its own internal legal order. However, the self-governance structure has proven insufficient in addressing the issue of corruption within the organization. This paper critically examines the regulatory challenges posed by the systematic corruption in FIFA and proposes several potential regulatory paths. The case study of FIFA serves as a practical example of how international sports organizations can be regulated through international law. Although the focus of this paper is on FIFA, the underlying legal issues presented by FIFA's corruption are likely universal among international sports organizations
