LIFE and waste recycling

The EU strategy for waste management, adopted in 1989 and reviewed in 19961, refers to prevention, re-use and recovery, optimisation of final disposal, and regulation of transport as strategic guidelines for the management of waste in Europe. The document specifies that waste management should first of all aim at preventing waste generation. If that is not possible, material waste recycling and the incineration of waste with energy recovery should be pursued. The u0091worstu0092 options are identified as the use of landfill and incineration without energy recovery. This order of preference is known as the u0091waste hierarchyu0092.
