The Media Effect on Investors Behaviour : The Publication of Spin-Off News (L'Impatto Dei Media Sul Comportamento Degli Investitori: Il Caso Degli Annunci Di Spin-Off)

English Abstract: This study investigates the effect of the publication of spin-off news, published between 2000 and 2011 in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), on the abnormal returns of companies involved in the deal. The results of the empirical analysis developed through an event study on a sample of 142 listed companies show positive and statistically significant CAR in the event window (-3,3), (0,3) and (0,1) for spin-offs which news was published in the WSJ within a week of the announcement: the most important newspapers seem to affect stock prices while not providing any new information, confirming the findings of existing studies.Italian Abstract: Il presente lavoro indaga l'effetto della pubblicazione delle notizie riguardanti gli spin-off, pubblicate tra il 2000 e il 2011 sul Wall Street Journal (Wsj), sui rendimenti anomali delle azioni delle società coinvolte. I risultati dell'analisi condotta tramite event study su un campione di 142 società quotate mostrano rendimenti anomali cumulati medi positivi e statisticamente significativi nei giorni immediatamente precedenti o successivi per gli spin-off la cui notizia è stata pubblicata sul Wsj entro una settimana dall'annuncio. Le testate giornalistiche di maggior rilievo sembrano influenzare i corsi azionari pur non fornendo alcuna nuova informazione, confermando quanto riscontrato dagli studi esistenti
