Mittelmeerfische
The Mediterranean dimension of fisheries
Fishing and aquaculture are important economic activities in the Mediterranean Sea, providing jobs and a choice of healthy products to all the bordering countries. The Mediterranean is home to a large variety of fish, shellfish and molluscs which are so prominent in the cuisine of many regions. Unfortunately, as in other seas, overfishing has taken its toll in the Mediterranean and many stocks have now become overexploited. One of the main objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is to secure the sustainability of fishing activities. Under the CFP reform, measures are in preparation to reinforce the region's fisheries management.
This booklet provides an insight into Mediterranean fisheries: the most common species, the volume of catches and the fishing gear used. The name of each species is indicated in all EU languages.
