Needs and prospects of remote sensing in developing countries : workshop November 23-27, 1993 Nairobi - Kenya; Part B: Workshop proceedings

With respect to Developing Countries (DC's) there are a number of issues which identify the level of RS development in every specific country. Such issues are, for instance, the production, processing and distribution of RS data, the application and use of RS data in sectorial problems, the adoption of RS procedures and experiences with GIS, and the training and level of know-how. In this framework, a group of both DC's and European Countries met in a brainstorming meeting on "Assessment of the Potential Needs of Remote Sensing Applications in Developing Countries" which was held at the Regional Centre for Surveying Mapping and Remote Sensing in Nairobi, Kenya, between 23-27 November 1993. The intention of this Workshop was to identify the Developing Countries' perceptions and priorities in the use of Remote Sensing data in order to steer future cooperation activities between these countries and the European Union (EU). This will aid the identification of the RS use in the 5-10 years in these countries. The final aim of the meeting was to identify the different levels of RS development in DC's and recommend specific methodologies to be followed in subsequent analysis and case studies. Furthermore, the aim was to make specific recommendations to all interested and involved partners such as data producers, funding agencies, governments and decisions makers, data and information users.
