This paper proposes an inquiry into the availability of services of general economic interest in Romania, proposing a case study on the sewage service provision in the North-East region. The situation of this region is analysed in the context of interregional and intraregional disparities emphasizing the close relation between the general development level and the provision of services of general economic interest as well as the particularly poorer situation of the border, rural, intermediate regions. The issues of applying of subsidiarity principle and the involvement of the private sector in the provision of these services are also discussed, in relation to the possible solutions for ensuring a better access of all citizens.
