Representation Schemes for Mathematical Programming Models
Because of the difficulties often experienced in formulating andunderstanding large scale models, much current research is directedtowards developing systems to support the construction andunderstanding of management science models. This paper discussesseven different methods for representing mathematical programmingmodels during the formulation phase of the modeling process. Theapproaches discussed are block-schematic, algebraic, three differentkinds of graphical schemes, a database-oriented approach andStructured Modeling. We emphasize representations that have graphicalelements suitable for incorporation in the interface to a modelingsystem. The different methods are compared using a common example andthe transformations that allow one to go from one representation toanother are discussed
