Reputationskonstitution: Medienberichterstattung und Rankingsysteme
Zentrales Anliegen der Forschungsarbeit ist es, einen möglichen Zusammenhang zwischen der Medienberichterstattung über CEOs und der Reputation, i.e. dem öffentlichen Ansehen dieser Personen ausfindig zu machen. Es wird im Sinne der Agenda-Setting-Theorie unterstellt, dass die quantitative und qualitative Darstellung von CEOs in Massenmedien, d.h. die Medienagenda, einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Publikumsagenda und in Folge auf die Reputationswerte dieser CEOs nimmt. In einem ersten Schritt erfolgte nach der inhaltlichen und terminologischen Abgrenzung der Begrifflichkeiten die Darstellung des Status Quo der Reputationsforschung. In Rekurs auf die derart gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wurde anschließend eine qualitative, inhaltsanalytische Untersuchung der medialen Printberichterstattung über drei CEOs der österreichischen Bankenwelt durchgeführt. Dabei wurden neun heimische Tages- sowie Wochentitel in den Jahren 2002, 2003 und 2004 berücksichtigt und hinsichtlich deduktiv und induktiv entwickelter Reputationsindikatoren untersucht. Die Ergebnisse wurden im Anschluss mit den Reputationswerten der CEOs im Zeitverlauf in Korrelation gesetzt. Als Indikator für die Höhe der Reputation dienten dabei regelmäßig publizierte Rankinglisten des österreichischen Nachrichtenmagazins „News“. Die Gegenüberstellung der Resultate lieferte jedoch keine eindeutigen Ergebnisse. Es konnte kein deutlich erkennbarer Zusammenhang zwischen der Medienberichterstattung und den Reputationswerten der CEOs dokumentiert werden. Ergo wird vermutet, dass Rankings und Medienberichte keine Abbilder oder Beschreibungen der Reputation liefern, sondern diese konstituieren. Öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit, i.e. mediale Präsenz als Nennung in Rankings oder Beiträgen, ist Voraussetzung für den Reputationserwerb, welcher jedoch nicht notwendigerweise die Folge von medialer Beachtung ist.
