Review on Impact of Global Value Chain on the Performance of SMEs
Accelerated globalization allowed companies to spread their operations across countries, leading to international production chains, also called Global Value Chains (GVCs). In recent times it was argued SMEs emerging and developing nations are threatened by globalization although Small and medium enterprises, or SMEs, has long been accepted as the engines of economic growth. SMEs are in a detrimental position compared with large firms for gaining benefits from globalization especially due to factors such as lack of human capital and access to finance and technical know-how, etc. GVC involves a numerous tasks or processes in the form of international networks. It will provide a good opportunity for SMEs to participate in globalization, as SMEs can participate in GVCs by taking up one task or process within the value chain and thus it is not necessary to have an entire production system. This study attempted to critically review the existing state of knowledge on the impact of GVC on the performance of SMEs. To accomplish the task total of five research papers published by Asian Development Bank Institute in 2021 were referred, which were based on East and South Asia: Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Viet Nam and Thailand. Descriptive analysis has been conducted for the critical evaluation of existing knowledge. The findings suggests that SMEs participate in GVCs become more competitive and earn high profits. Therefore policies should be formulated to enhance the participation of SMEs in GVC.act Body]
