Rural and smalltown markets in Java : continuity or change?

The author aims at reconsidering the organisational patterns and changes that have been reported in recent studies of the market networks of rural Java, by placing them within a broader historical framework than has previously been attempted. It is shown that there has been a strong continuity with the past in the degree of control exercised over petty commodity exchange through the market system by government bureaucracy. (DÜI-Sen)
