TANDEM_GIS I: A (feasibility) study towards a common geographical base for statistics across the European Union
The NUTS (Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics) system as Eurostat uses it, contains some limitations when doing statistical analysis using geographical information system. The TANDEM GIS report analyses the feasibility of creating smaller statistical areas for the purpose of comparing statistical data at a level below the NUTS 5 (commune). In the report a prototype is presented which consists of two different systems: regular tessellations (grids) and irregular tessellations (polygons) as they are used in Finland and the United Kingdom. The conclusion of the report is that such a system is feasible but that further development is necessary.
