The Classification of Rural Areas in the European Context: Some Remarks on the Article of J. R. Blunden, W. T. R. Pryce and P. Dreyer, Regional Studies 32(2)

The reform of the European Structural Funds requires a classification of rural areas according to their level of economic development. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are a tool that potentially offers advantages compared to classical classification methods. This paper analyses the strengths and weaknesses of an approach, proposed by Blunden et al. , 1998. It tries to generalize the conditions necessary to realize the potential of the ANNs for classifying rural areas. La reforme des fonds structurels europeens necessite la classification des zones rurales en fonction de leur niveau de developpement economique. Des reseaux neuronaux artificiels constituent un outil qui pourrait s'averer avantageux compareaux methodes de classification classiques. Cet article cherche a analyser les forces et faiblesses d'une approche avancee par Blunden et al . qui essaye de generaliser les conditions necessaires a la realisation du potentiel des reseaux neuronaux artificiels quant a la classification des zones rurales. Die Reform des europaischen Strukturfondes verlangt eine Klassifikation landlicher Gebiete, die ihrer wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung entspricht. Kunstliche neuronale Netze (Artifical Neural Networks - ANN) stellen ein Werkzeug dar, das im Vergleich mit klassischen Klassifikationsmethoden potentielle Vorteile bietet. Der vorliegende Aufsatz analysiert die Starken und Schwachen eines Problemansatzes von Blunden et al . Er versucht, die Bedingungen zu verallgemeinern, die fur die Verwirklichung des Potentials der ANNs zur Klassifikation landlicher Gebiete erforderlich sind.
