The Composition of Working Groups in Industry-Specific Standardization Organization

So far industry-specific standardization has found little interest in research, even though the developed standards have remarkable impact on the respective industries. Broad literature about standard setting in various fields is available, but as Lerner and Tirole (2006) remark, research that covers the function of standard-setting organizations is almost not present. This paper offers a general approach to the composition of working groups in industry-specific standardization organization (ISSO). Crucial criteria such as size and heterogeneity of working groups will be specified and their impact on the standard quality and process duration will be considered. These categories, delivered in a matrix, offer a framework for steering committees (SC), working group leaders (WGL) and participants to evaluate their position in ISSO, which supports them conveying their strategy.
