The Development of Innovation Systems and the Art of Innovation Management - Strategy, Control and the Culture of Innovation (Special Issue)

The framework for developing a methodology and set ofguidelines to better understand innovation systems is provided in this specialissue of Technology Analysis & Strategic Management. Two blockagesto innovation are identified: an insufficient number of trained persons ininnovation management and a lack of effective organizational mechanisms torealize the full potential of innovations and then transfer them from oneenvironment to another. Means of overcoming these blockages are exploredthrough examination of transitions in innovation, the culture of innovation,reasoning and sense-making of innovations, and whether innovation processes canbe controlled. Looking beyond traditional indicators of the success of innovations, such asthe number of new patents or the prosperity of firms and regions, toless-visible indicators, such as knowledge creation and new management conceptsto maintain and generate innovativeness, a new understanding of the managementof innovation can evolve.
