For decades the U.S. K-12 math education has been mired in dismal performance. The Common Core math standards -- the culmination of more than two decades of standard-based reform efforts -- promise to empower the American students to catch up with the international high performers. Being deeply rooted in progressivism, however, the Common Core math standards can be best described as mediocre, and their low academic expectations on students will further exacerbate the learning plight of American students
