The uncertain path of transition : food, nutrition and poverty dynamics in Southeast Asia

This paper provides an overview of dynamic interactions among food systems, human nutrition and poverty across Southeast Asia. It identifies not just recent trends but areas of uncertainty in the patterns and nature of such interactions as they relate to ongoing macroeconomic, agricultural and epidemiological transformations in the region. The paper argues that while continued market liberalization and income growth are necessary to reduce aggregate poverty it is dangerous to assume that social and ecological systems can adapt quickly to the risks inherent in economic change.
