In the first Chapter, general information about trade fairs and the exhibition industry is presented (definitions, integration into the marketing mix, historical background, benefits of trade fairs). INTRODUCTION: Trade exhibitions make a significant contribution to many business sectors around the world. The more global a business sector the more important, the role of trade shows in introducing vendors to buyers and ensuring that industry players maintain contact with industry developments. Trade shows tend to be a celebration of success with successful companies exhibiting and successful companies visiting. These exhibitions do much more than introduce one person to another of course. We know that the major exhibitions that we work with in this study are global & lsquo;meetings places & rsquo; providing a highly cost efficient environment in which very senior management can meet with other senior management to discuss partnerships and joint ventures, to maintain and deepen business relationships and to identify new business opportunities. EXHIBITIONS ECONOMIC IMPACT: The exhibition industry is growing rapidly around the globe. For example, in the US and Canada, approximately 13,185 exhibitions are held annually. They occupy more than 500 million net square feet of space, and produce total gross revenues of $10.4 billion, including revenue from exhibition space, advertising, promotion, and registration fees.In 2000, the exhibition industry attracted 44.4 million qualified buyers and created a total estimated economic impact of $120 billion in the US and Canada. However, studies on the estimated economic impact of the exhibition industry have not been actively conducted. PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to estimate the economic impact of the exhibition industry in Egypt. This study defines exhibitions as an industrial exhibitions with the purpose of carrying out commercial activities, such as: promoting a company or its products, selling products, enhancing the image of a company or its products, and collecting industrial information. The exhibition should meet the standards of having more than three foreign countries represented, and more than ten foreign participants. The main purpose of this independent research is analysis of the economic impact of the Egyptian exhibition industry to provide fundamental understanding about the economic impacts of trade Exhibitions; to empirically examine the effectiveness of different kind of trade Exhibitions in development; to detect the relation between trade Exhibitions and the development of exports between Egypt and world during the study period 1990-2002, by answering some research questions and by using time-series data from the period of 1990 to 2002. The direct economic impact is the value-added contribution to the gross domestic product and employment within the sector itself including organiser staff, venues staff and so on. The indirect economic impact is this is activity and employment supported down the supply chain, by example, jobs created at a stand/booth builder’s factory. The induced economic impact of trade fairs is employment and activity supported by those directly or indirectly employed by the sector spending their incomes on goods and services in the wider economy. This helps to support jobs in the industries that supply these purchases, and includes jobs in retail outlets, in companies producing consumer goods and in a range of service industries. We can summarise the three components of economic impact in one diagrammatic. It is important to recognise that in any study there are leakages such as investment outside of the economy being analysed, some taxes paid and the potential for some double counting. METHODOLOGY: Concerning the trade exhibitions spillover literature in the thesis, the study is going to employ the quantitative literature review methodology, commonly called a meta-analysis. Meta-analysis rigorously combines the outcomes of several works that study the same phenomena and use the same or comparable metrics, it rely mostly on statistical methods, namely cross-section regressions. KEY QUESTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN DETERMINED FOR THIS STUDY: Q1: What are the developmental dimensions of trade exhibitions in general?
