Translating hopes and visions from regional economic plans into achievements
This paper develops an improved understanding of strategic planning for economic development eforts by challenging what it is actually and what contribution it makes to regional activities. To achieve this, the paper discusses a current case study research project that explores how well regional strategic planning is meeting the challenges posed in its present context. It considers the ideal nature and expected benefits of strategic planning processes, particularly in complex collaborative organisations. It discusses the ways strategic planning can assist regional economic development organisations to fulfil their role and elements of strategy that may contribute to the implementation efforts of those organisations. A framework for strategic planing in regional economic development organisations is presented. The paper suggests that the regional strategic plan of the future could look different from its current stereotype of a thick report collecting dust on the shelf.
