Universities and Living Standards in Canada
As should be expected of public institutions which annually account for over $20 billions of expenditures on education and research, Canadian universities make very large contributions to Canada's economy and society. Although much attention is directed to those contributions made by the commercialization of research, in fact, this is a very small part of universities' activities and attendant contributions. Far larger impacts come from the education of a highly skilled and adaptable citizenry and from the basic research which underlies all creative and productive applied research. Canadian university researchers excel in research productivity and the same people, as teachers, are the main drivers behind the fact that Canada ranks near the top among nations in the skill levels and flexibility of its labour force.
