Ways of Improving the Teaching of Word Equations at Choto – Tafara Secondary School : A Case of Form Two Learners

The purpose of this study was to find out ways of improving the teaching of word equations at Choto – Tafara secondary school in Gokwe South. A case study research design was employed. Most teachers rely on teacher – centered teaching methods such as the lecture method. This research argues that such approaches contribute much towards learners' poor performance. The study revealed that the cooperative teaching method is quite effective in improving the teaching of word equations. From this study, two main policy implications have been derived, i.e: teachers should use teaching methods that mainly involve learners so that they can perform better; and also teachers should use code mixing, that is; mixing English and any other indigenous language in order help learners understand better, some of the concepts
