It is of course quite impossible for me to speak for all librarians on the subject of ‘What the public librarian wants from computers’, although I think I should not be far wrong in saying that at the present time only a minute proportion of public librarians have given serious consideration to the applications of the computer in their libraries. Perhaps I can speak better for London librarians than for those outside London, and before I proceed with my theme I am sure that some of you would like to hear a little about what work is already being done by computers in the London public library services.
