8th Asian Regional Congress of Labour and Social Security Law
This is the first time that the Congress to be convened in Asia under its new name, the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law. There are also two new practices which will be adopted for this Congress. First of all, rather than just submitting their written reports as was common practice in the past, country reporters will now be invited to submit their written reports and present them personally at the Congress. Secondly, there is a call for papers where other people can submit and present their papers at the Congress. The main themes of this Congress are, (i) the participation of women in the labour market – towards the goal of gender equality in employment in the 21st century; (ii) the impetus for economic restructuring and the protection of workers’ rights; and (iii) the Asian experiences of the old-age security or pension system. These are all important issues facing the Asian economies today, and it is our hope that through the discussions, sharing of experiences and exchange of ideas, not only can we gain a better understanding of these issues, in terms of how they affect our lives, but also that the information generated in these gatherings will be of help to public policymakers in their future policy formulation.
