GIGA Forum "Business involvement in African development: Can South Africa be a bridge to the first world?"
Against the background of Africa’s increased strategic significance as a 900-million people continent, with a vast resource export potential and slowly transforming socio-political scene, the lecture will critically review South Africa’s rise as the dominant economic power of the continent. South Africa currently tries to stay close to established groupings of both the semideveloped and developed countries as well as the third-world poor, often finding herself in paradoxical situations and strategy dilemmas. In line with this, South Africa’s image across Africa is far from unproblematic, with the latest xenophobic eruptions in the country illustrating the complexity of these changes.
