International Workshop "Increasing Labor Market Flexibility - Boon or Bane?"
Most economies have increased the flexibility of their national labor markets to facilitate adjustment to rapidly changing economic conditions. For firms this may imply opportunities for higher productivity and profitability, improved competitiveness, and a greater ability to respond to fluctuations of demand. Workers may also benefit if more flexible work arrangements improve work-life balance, increase their skills, raise their job satisfaction, or simplify access to the labor market. However, higher labor market flexibility may also come at some costs, e.g. by increased employment uncertainty for employees and lower incentives to invest in firm-specific human capital. It is an open question whether the gains from enhanced labor market flexibility outweigh the costs. The workshop focuses on all effects of labor market flexibility, both with respect to labor supply at the individual and aggregate level as well as labor demand.
