Models are essential in developing rigorous, coherent and robust frameworks for economic analysis, thinking and policymaking in central banks. This one-week seminar focuses on the basics of economic modelling with a combination of lectures on introductory modelling theory and practical exercises on the topic. The following topics are likely to be covered: • basic optimisation techniques; • model microfoundations; • basic models of the business cycle; • approximation techniques; • simple solution methods; • univariate (long-run) modelling: cointegration; • construction and estimation of small multivariate econometric models; • forward-looking models and dealing with expectations; and • model analysis and evaluation.
