Workshop series “Dialogues between organizational theory and the social sciences”
National science systems, particularly those in the OECD countries, have come under considerable pressure to change in the last 10 to 15 years. Given the repeatedly attested importance that science and research have for the innovative capacity of national economies, the need to legitimate science in the eyes of society has intensified immensely. Instruments for promoting quality control, some of them new, are being drawn upon and expanded. In addition, society’s trust in the mechanisms of self-monitoring has eroded greatly as multiple linkages between society and science have become ever more bewildering and incalculable. The change in organized science has therefore been described primarily as a fundamental change in the social conditions of its legitimation.
