This book gives an overview of the work carried out in the basic research area of the Esprit programme. Each project, working group and network is described in a standard format covering its aims, approach and methods, progress and results, potential impact, latest publications, and information dissemination activities. In each case details of participating organizations are provided together with a contact point. Basic research in information technology is central to the continued health of research and development in this field. Basic research in Esprit aims to replenish the reservoir of new knowledge and expertise on which industrial research must draw to ensure tomorrow's innovation, and to act as a major source of highly trained researchers. The dual goals of providing new technological expertise and helping to ensure the future availability of high-calibre scientists and engineers are key elements in the long-term ability of the European Union to compete in global markets. This updated edition incorporates progress and results reported since late 1991; and contains the first descriptions of the many new projects, working groups and actions launched following the Esprit III call for proposals in 1993.
