Performance appraisal and career opportunities: A case study

The purpose is to provide robust empiricalinsights on the individual and organisational determinants of perceived performance appraisalDesign/methodology/approach – Based on a powerful set of survey data (n > 12,000), we specify andestimate ordered probit models for individual perceptions of performance appraisal and careeropportunities. Explanatory variables include individual background variables, and characteristics of thelocal working environment.Findings – Our results indicate that performance and payoff is better balanced among women thanamong men. Moreover, perceptions of performance appraisal and career opportunities depend oncharacteristics of the local work environment, with positive influence from key phenomena like changecapability, competency focus, trust and identity.Research limitations/implications – Our data sett is a cross-section for a single employer.
