What Donald Rumsfeld described in his quote is, that the largest part of our future is connectedto a certain degree of uncertainty. This paper will deal with uncertain events thatlead to a fortunate outcome. Despite of the fact that the relationship of future events anduncertainty existed for all times, the way that men handled uncertainty changed radicallyover the time. Therefore, this chapter will first provide an overview of the history of “uncertainty-management”. As in the past, uncertainty was almost exclusively connected to negativeevents, the history of uncertainty management can be equated with the history of RiskManagement. After this, the actual state of affairs of the management of uncertainty will bedescribed. Thereon, the problem that this paper addresses will be outlined and the targetswill be defined.
