26. Equality
Rather than a right, equality started out rather as a horizon to achieve, and there was ample space for interpreting ‘equality’ alternatively as equality of treatment (treating everyone equally), equality of outcomes (making sure every identity group achieves the same outcome), and equality of opportunities (making sure everyone has the same opportunities). These equality notions complement each other and sometimes overlap. They are hotly contested.
